Post Discharge
Every parent is concerned about when their baby will be discharged. Some premature babies go home in a few days and some take a few weeks. More often than not, the earlier the baby, the longer they stay in the hospital.
Premature babies are ready to go home when their breathing is stable, they are feeding normally, are gaining weight and aren't in any other clinical danger. After taking so long to take your baby home, the initial excitement may pave the way for fear for the baby.
Once your baby is home, it is very vital to take precautions with everyone who comes to visit the baby and you. Some of the precautions that need to be taken are:
- The visitor needs to be completely healthy. Even a minor common cold can make your baby sick
- Hygiene is very important - every time someone holds your baby, make sure that they've washed their hands before that
- The visitor shouldn't smoke before visiting you
