Kangaroo Mother & Father Care
Kangaroo care is the method of holding a baby that involves skin-to-skin contact. The baby is placed in an upright position against the parent's bare chest.
The concept of kangaroo care came in the late 1970s in Colombia, when there was shortage of incubators for the babies. Through this method, it was discovered that these babies thrived. Now kangaroo care is an internationally recognized method of providing care to both preterm and term babies.
Kangaroo care has the following benefits:
- It helps the baby sleep better
- It maintains and regulates the body temperature of the babies, getting them adjusted to the environment
- The baby breathes better
- It helps the baby's gain weight
- It helps develop the baby's brain
